ENG370H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Transculturation, Liminality, Ambivalence
Document Summary
This idea of existing in the third space not being bad is shown in both short stories as the main characters are allowed to become self explorative and interspective. Sites for these realizations: in swimming lessons it is in the bath water, and in the man it is through the writing. The third space is used often in postcolonial writing: liminality: another word for limit" but not as harsh and definite. It is an in- between space or a threshold space. In postcolonial writing liminal space is expressed in different ways (the water in swimming lessos for example because it also a transition zone for the character). Liminality allows the idea that we are not one coherent person and allows for contradictions (for example, being free but oppressed) Is created through discourse (often through the us vs them binary) Can be applied to other theories apart from postcolonial and transnational discourse (like feminist theories on woman and man others)
