Document Summary

Forests create, store and mobilize nutrients and water. Plants get increased surface area for nutrient absorption, fungus gets carbonhydrates. Soils supply water and nutrients to trees transpiration stream: a necessary evil. To get water to the leafs, trees open small holes in their leafs to allow evaporation of water so that it creates a pressure gradient between leafs and the roots/trunk. This creates vacuum effect which brings up water from the bottom to the top of the tree where it is needed. Cools the earth with this release of water. Provide habitat, maintain soil, air and water quality, and play key roes in biogeochemical cycles. Store carbon, release oxygen, moderate climate mature forests are complex ecosystems. Trees provide many ecological services forests are economically valuable. Softwood = timber harvested from coniferous trees (from boreal) Ntfps = non-timber forest products, such as medicinal, herbal, decorative and edible products.
