Document Summary

Human use of surface water has environmental impacts. Downstream and transboundary impacts very important in canada: wate(cid:396) does(cid:374)"t stay i(cid:374) o(cid:374)e spot a(cid:374)d flo(cid:449)s o(cid:448)e(cid:396) (cid:271)o(cid:396)de(cid:396)s canadian water affects us. Decreased flow when we withdraw water, generally reduced flow. Changes in erosion and siltation rates when we withdraw water, we change the speed of the river and erosion patterns. Impacts on local climate profound, very strongly affected patterns like lake effect on snow. Changes in water salinity has to do with evaporation. Pollution, eutrophication, salinization, waterlogging all consequences of extensive water use. Impacts on habitat, wildlife, ecosystems broad effects. We have erected thousands of dams- has been going on since beginning of human history. Used a lot in canada very important. Diversion dam = water diverted but not stored in reservoir. Instead of forming an impoundment or a reservoir it diverts the water in another direction: diversion drastically alters a rivers ecology.
