Surface zone: warmed by sunlight, stirred by wind. Transitional zone: temperature decreases rapidly with depth, density increases rapidly with depth. Deep zone 1000m: dense, cold, sluggish water, unaffected by weather. Upwelling = upward flow of cold, deep water. Downwelling = oxygen-rich water sinks where surface currents come together. Surface currents are driven by wind, through friction. Gyres are caused by coriolis force + friction: debris, garbage is accumulated.
