ENV100Y5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Relate, Paradigm Shift, Pseudoscience
Module 1: May 7-18
Date: Tuesday, May 8
SESSION 2: INTRODUCTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE (I)
Readings: Chapter 1
Environment Defined
● Environment is legal entity - it can have rights like a person depending on jurisdiction
○ Environmental policies/practices need to be defined by various organizations
● Culturally/philosophically - fraile, nice to have, etc.
Environmental Bill of Rights
● Passed by legislature of Ontario in 1993
● Gives Ontario citizen rights to participate in environmental decision-making
Environment Defined Cont’d
● We are all stakeholders in environment
○ Earth is closed system - what goes around comes around
● Who is responsible and affected?
● How do we set priorities, create policies, and handle conflicting agendas?
○ A lot of current issues relate to environmental issues
How We Relate to Environment?
● We all relate differently
○ Philosophical - how do we value it
○ Cultural - connect to natural environment, i.e. indigenous people
○ Religious/spiritual - i.e. environmental stewardship
○ Aesthetic
○ Emotional
● Reflected in artwork
○ Ex. Pastural - nature exist to support human life, nature is nurturer - provides for
humans, sees nature as something benin
○ Ex. Human elements removed - colour, shapes - something beautiful to
contemplate
○ Ex. Something contemplative. Humans are dwarfed (small) in comparison to size
of nature = power of nature to wipe us out
Environmental issues is inherently interdisciplinary
Knowledge is greater than “sum of the parts”
Science and How it Works
● A systematic process for learning about the world and testing our understanding of it
