Document Summary

Chapter 3 - ecosystems ecology. Wednesday, october 7, 2015. Study of interactions among organisms and their physical environment as an integrated system. Ecosystem ecology is a young science (20th century) George tansley created the term. A way of looking at organisms and their interactions with the environment as an integrated system. Focuses on functions, processes, fluxes (energy, nutrients), biogeochemical cycles, etc. Little ecosystems are contained in larger ones, and you go small to large. Ecosystems are nested and hierarchical. Inputs, outputs, feedback loops, resistance and resilience, emergent properties. Boundary between the biotic and abiotic components is often blurred. Closed system - matter doesn"t arrive or leave. Open system - matter arrives and leaves. No such thing, energy has to come in. Resilience = system changed in response to a disturbance, but later returns to. Negative fbl - density dependent population regulation (stabilizing) Positive fbl - loss or arctic ice (destabilizing) = bad news, out of control.
