Document Summary

Chapter 11 - mineral resources & mining. Monday, december 28, 2015. Many ways to classify resources: Recyclable resources (classified on basis of management) Earth resources and living resources (classified on basis of origin) Critical flow resources (effectively non- renewable because of mismanagement) Common property resources (classified on basis of ownership) Other (human resources, ecological knowledge, etc. ) Earth resources are extracted from the solid earth. Non- renewable on a humanly accessible timescale. Some energy resources (e. g. , fossil fuels, uranium) Generally excludes living resources (why ?) Living resources replace or restock themselves by births and growth. Living, growing, regenerating populations (fish, trees, etc) Stock is renewable (at least in theory) Living population stocks can be mismanaged to the point where the population crashes irretrievably. Managed differently from nonliving earth resources. Management approach: balancing stocks & flows. Some replenishable resources can become effectively non- renewable. Replenishable in principle, but on a long time scale (groundwater, soil) Susceptible to mismanagement in practice.
