Document Summary
Chapter 4 - part 2. Populations can be separated in many ways. Speciation - where species come from, creation of new species. Sympatric speciation = populations become reproductively isolated within the same area. Life"s diversity results from numerous speciation events. Populations become isolated, happens somehow reproductively. Easiest way to create new species ^ Tree of life - 2 things going on: Extinction = the disappearance of a species from earth. Happened even before humans showed up. 99% of all things that existed have gone extinct. Most extinction from interactions with other species. Average shelf life for species - 4 million years. Some species are more vulnerable to extinction than others. Rapid environmental change may lead to extinction. But some species are resilient: Endemic species: species with a small geographic distribution. Only found in one area, scale on the area varies. Small populations: smaller the less - lack genetic diversity. Slow growth potential: long time to mature, few offspring, etc.
