Chapter 14 - air pollution & stratospheric ozone. Outdoor air pollution affects climate and harms people and ecosystems. Air pollutants = gases and particulate material added to the atmosphere. Has decreased in recent decades bc of government policy and improved technologies in developed countries. Developing countries and urban areas still have significant problems (ex. China: permanent (conservative) gases - they don"t change very much, aerosols - teeny tiny droplets. Many pollutants are aerosols, which vary in both time and space. Only the largest volcanic eruptions can get to the stratospheric. Waves breaking - major source of salt moving from ocean to land- based reservoirs. One of the main ways sodium moves. Natural sources can pollute: fires. Pollutes atmosphere with soot (tiny particles) and gases. Over 60 million hectares of forests and grasslands burn each year. Fires are made more severe by human action. Fires from slash- and- burn clearing of forests. Natural sources can pollute: volcanoes.
