Homeostasis: root word is stationary, homeo meaning same. The system has a tendency to want to stay in the same state. Systems with homeostasis, if there"s a change it will try to maintain its cond"t and resist. System has the ability to resist a change and keep it"s condition. Can crash after a long time of resisting. Resilience: the ability of a system to recover from the disturbance. But with resilience, can keep on coming back. Emergent properties: characteristics of the system that are not evident in the individual components of that system. When the individual components all come together, it turns into something whole that provide a characteristic that as separate components cannot provide. Tree provides habitats, but components of a tree cannot provide a habitat. Essentially, the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Cycle: a system that consists of 2+ interconnected reservoirs. Hydrologic cycle, the rock cycle, tectonic cycle, etc.
