Module 2, session 18- species interactions & ecology. Populations: shrink / grow / remain stable but 4 ways that populations can change size: natality (be born) = births, mortality (die)= deaths, immigration= arrival from outside, emigration= departure to outside. Populations grow in: unregulated population growth: exponential rate of reproduction. Starts off with stable growth rates, grows rapidly. Because all of these organisms are using resources and resources are finite: logistic growth: the s-shaped pattern in which the growth of a population typically slows down as it approaches carrying capacity. Involves environmental resistance; the idea that there is going to be pressure put on a population to [selective pressure] prevent the population to spiral out of control. * carrying capacity* is a quality of an environment; not a population. Where the place is ad resources are relates to carrying capacity ex: some organisms like yeast, grow fast but then stabilize.
