Document Summary

Central case: mer bleue bog, 35 km2 protected wetland, peat soils formed over 8000 years. Carbon balance in peat: primary production stores carbon. Interdisciplinary research project studying the influence of climate on carbon balance. Bedrock : continuous mass of solid rock (earths crust) Weathering: physical ( no chemical changes) chemical ( chemical interactions), biological ( organisms break it down) Soil formation is very slow it is affected by: parent material composition, climate, topography, vegetation, biological activity. Soil profile: cross section of soil as a whole. Humus: stable decomposed organix matter, contributes significantly to soil structure, influences water retention, nutrient content and cation exchange capacity. Soil color: black or dark: organic matter, pale grey: leaching, red: ion. Soil texture: proportion of sand, silt and clay, particle sizes and pores influence how air and water pass through it. Loam= even mixture of sand silt clay best for plant growth. Soil structure: how sand silt and clay are held together.
