Document Summary
Lakes are highly variable in time and space: different productivity, temperatures, seasonal variation, and spatial variation. Oligotrophic, mesotrophic, eutrophic (least nutrients to most) Fertility related to nutrient availability, age, substrate and climate. Systems that combine elements of land and water. Area of land whose soil is saturated permanently. Soil is anaerobic, slow decomposition, water may be fresh, saline or brackish. Accumulate peat (decaying vegetation: peat is not good, huge affect on climate. Most biologically diverse and productive ecosystems on earth: slow runoff and erosion, reduce flooding, buffer shorelines against storms, recharge aquifers, filter pollutants, retain sediment and nutrients, breeding and staging grounds for migrating species. Changes to national fisheries act and navigable waters protection act (slides 23 and 24)
