Lecture 1 ­ Poverty can lead to desperation, dependent on natural resources ­ Example – poor country such as Brazil is in debt, use their assets (the Amazon,  trees) ­ Adam Smith father of physics, defined income as something you can achieve  without running the environment ­ Sustainable development has been around since the 80s ­ 1987, UN Commission of Environment  ­ Sustainability  ▯use resources but use them wisely ­ Want to achieve a balance between environmental, economic and social goals ­ Despair is a luxury that we can’t afford ­ Ga – gigaanum  ­ Age of earth is a philosophical question  ­ Sample question: Is the age of the earth measured in thousands of years, millions  of years or billions of years?  ­ Oldest rock on Earth was found in Canada because some continents have very  ancient cores and Canada has the Canadian Shield! ­ Other places with old rocks – Australia and Africa ­ Model – way that scientists construct something so that they can study a process  that is too big, or too small etc. (could be physical model or computer model) ­ If we have a model of how the solar system formed, we can make an estimation of  when earth was “born” ­ In the beginning, surface of E
