Leon battista alberti, sant"andrea (interior and exterior), mantuam for the gonzaga family, designed 1472: tried together with form and principal, massive heavy brick walls. Basilica of maxentius rome, 4th century ad: dramatic light. Leonardo, the last supper, in santa maria delle grazie, milan, begun in 1480s, finished 1498: coming together for meal, symbolic gesture. What"s going to happen, he is going to sacrifice, his blood will be shed: chaos of reactions beside jesus. Facial expressions, gestures: new level of naturalism. Animated faces: became textbook for other painters on how to achieve realistic paintings of figures, harmonize every component of composition. Andrea del castagno, last supper, florence, c. 1445. Leonardo, mona lisa, c. 1503: lisa gheradini del giocondo, painting commissioned for marriage/wedding. Balcony for higher class: visual devices that comment on the sitter personality, create mind and feeling behind the face. Michelangelo, david, 1501-1504: originally made for the exterior of the cathedral of florence.
