Document Summary

History painting is also known as istoria. Landscapes and portraits were seen as merely a record of appearances, which were valued much less than history painting. Landscapes, for example, were more meant for backgrounds only. Religious, biblical scenes, were also considered to be history painting. This idea of history painting being so important, came into the 17th century. An example of history painting is deposition by giovanni bellini, in 1515. A painting of a dead jesus being taken down from the cross. Landscape with flight into egypt, annibale carracci, 1603-1604. Part of a set of 6 paintings that were produced for a chapel. Each of the six pieces were called lunettes , so there were six lunettes in total. The scene is mary holding baby jesus, with joseph (his human father), fleeing egypt in. It"s possible that he had one of his assistants paint the figures, but it is not certain order to save jesus.
