A painting of an assistant/servant to velazquez. Highly revered painting, so famous that it was displayed in the pantheon. Interesting because in spanish art, there is a deep religious ferver. Immigrated to spain a long time ago, so the moorish people have a long history in spain and took other, so only a portion of northern spain was still catholic. Eventually, native spanish people rebelled and took back spain from the moorish people. The moorish people were either driven out or forced to become. Moriscos = a spanish word meanings spanish muslims, originally from north africa, converted to christianity. Moorish people, because of the history, were heavily discriminated against, even though they had been converted for a long time. Velazquez treats this man with great dignity, despite him being a moor. The pose of juan de pareja is based off of titian"s portrait of a man.
