Combination prints were a way that photography was used to make art. Post-mortem photography was a trend in the sense that it was indexical. Some regarded post-mortem photography as relics or memories of their deceased family members. Famous beauty who commissioned plenty of portraits of herself. Played with the idea of visual stereotypes and the commodification of the feminine. Countess de castiglione with the mirror framing her gaze, pierre-louis pierson, 1856-60. She was in 500 images like this. She is often caught up in framing devices, like mirrors. Gives rise to the idea of women being objectified and being a commodity for men because of their beauty. She is shown as an image to be consumed by the public. In showing the framing apparatus in total, she is critiquing the idea of her being a commodity. I. e. the frame in the image can be seen as a whole, and the apparatus holding up the frame can be seen as well.
