Collected artifacts (tools, beadwork, clothing) and bringing it back with his sketches. Majority of the subject matter is aboriginal. This motivated him to document aboriginal artwork. He felt that with european expansion, indigos people would not be around for much longer. Artists have looked at his work as documentary as he intended. Had a journal with him all along. In the painting, the characters are not disgusting or any negative comment that he had. There is a break between the writing and the painting. His visual production is composed from various sketches, artifacts. For example, flat head women and child 1849 to 1859.
