Was to promote the living and growing art. The canadian art society did not receive any support from national gallery. They collected people who wanted to be part of the association. They were artist who had trouble showing art work: paul-elile borduas, philip surrey, alfred pellan, jori smith, william goodridge robers, marian scott. They elected a person: paul elile borduas: too radical, too involved with the politics in quebec, 15 artists and his put together artwork to challenge traditional values. !1: main message of the work was that god does not exist. Les automatic: created abstract painting, motivated by the external international in uence of surrealism in france, did not want to be part of an quebec academic teaching, linked together by automatic drawing. Letting the pen wander on the paper. Idea of having an automatic free movement with the hand: borduas was chased out of quebec. Used an palette knife to explore light and space.
