Velum can be raised and lowered to open and close the passage from the pharynx and the nasal cavity. *velic refers to the upper surface of the velum. *velar refers to the lower surface of the velum (that comes into contact with the back of the tongue) Sounds made with velic opening are called nasal or nasalized. Nasalized vowels in french un / eux ; f lin / filet ; chant / chat. Sounds made with velic closure are called oral. The tongue: lower articulator, involved in all places of articulation, except for the lips (bilabial and labiodental, divided into 5 parts from the front to the back: Tip, blade, front, back, root: tip = apex. Apico-dental = dental (/ / then, / / these) Apico-alveolar (/t/, /d/, /n/, /s/, /z/, /l/: blade =lamina.
