Today we"ll be observing how the conventions of responsible government worked after the 2004 and the 2006 federal elections, both of which resulted in minority governments. In november 2000, the liberals under chr tien won their third consecutive majority. 2004 federal elections - paul martin calls for a general election after a year of being elected. Liberals took a major dip, but they won the majority. Paul martin won the confidence of the house and stayed on as pm. The fall of the liberals - harped moved a formal non-confidence motion and won the votes. Martin requested an election for january 23, 2006. (winter is bad for elections) The 2006 election - conservatives became the largest party in the house. What have we learned - when a party wins over 50% of all the seats, it forms a majority government.
