POL111H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Justin Trudeau
Document Summary
Right now, liberal prime minister justin trudeau is fighting some of the premiers over his government"s carbon tax. Under the trudeau plan, every province is expected to adopt either his carbon tax at the federal rates, or an equivalent tax of their own. If a province refuses to introduce its own carbon tax at the federal rates, the federal government will step in and impose its own tax in that province. Right now only five provinces have their own carbon tax or an equivalent program that is acceptable to the trudeau government. Saskatchewan, alberta, manitoba, new brunswick & ontario flatly refuse to introduce their own carbon taxes. (note, this group includes three of the four western provinces). Saskatchewan, alberta & ontario are suing the federal government in court, arguing the federal tax is unconstitutional. We also saw back in class #10, that the power base of the conservative party is western.
