Tens of millions of chinese died of starvation and millions more were put to death by the state. After mao"s death, china transitioned to an oligarchy with term limits and other checks on power for leaders. On june 4, 1989, chinese soldiers opened fire on protesters in tiananmen. Communist party has remained in power as china became the fastest- growing economy in the world. Chinese people today have more liberties and social freedoms, but political freedom is still lacking. Does not tolerate a frontal attack on the communist party. Protestors are imprisoned, re-educated or never heard from again. Organized political opposition and independent labour unions are banned. Minorities (tibetans and muslims in xinjiang province) are repressed. Investing heavily at all levels of government to keep its own population in check.
