Document Summary

He says that we operate according to the relative calculation of advantage and harm. Hobbes hold no higher value than peace, and believes the only way to achieve it is to enforce standardized, effective laws through superior use of power. In my desire to preserve myself, can i agree that i"m going to limit my freedom as others will do the same? . Hobbes says that these kinds of contracts are worthless without enforcement. Once you suspect that the person that should be following the contract is cheating, you will most likely do the same. This seemingly heavenly idea of the free individual, with no one superior breathing down your neck, is actually disastrous, hobbes tells us. And he"s not talking about lunatics or children he is talking to the rational, self-preserving individuals. He is not accusing them of being evil or sinful they are just being rational.
