Document Summary

He explains what humans are like without a proper education. We are like prisoners in a cave; we are bound. Image of cave= contrast between world of sense-perception and world of thought. We can only see the back of the cave; ignorance. We assume that the shadows and darkness are representations of reality. People are holding idols above their heads. Shadows have an echo, so they speak to us. If a prisoner is released (not escaped), nothing will happen if you"re unaware that you are a prisoner. Will be forced to stand up and walk towards the fire. The prisoner is dragged up a difficult tunnel, and then to the real world, a place without idols. The real world is 3d and bright. Gradually your eyes will adjust but at first you"ll see images (reflections) Staring at the sun (not physically but mentally) enlightens us about forms. The released prisoner, however, must return to the cave.
