Characteristic of political ideologies (used in all ideologies: action/change: motivate people to do something. Orient political action: simplify: simplified versions of complex issues/ideologies. Not necessarily an ideology but these two chapters are extracted and used as an ideology. In the nature of man, there are three principal causes of quarrel: first, competition (gain); secondly, diffidence (safety); thirdly, glory (reputation). Detroit example (diffidence): there are no cops, few police around. You see someone coming closer and you move back and forth and realize they are following you. You start to fear for your life so you shoot. Someone has seen you shoot and only know that you"re a murderer so now they shoot you thus creating a chain reaction of a rational response.
