Archaic period (750/700-480: lycurgus and solon, philosoph(cid:455)"s (cid:271)i(cid:396)th the presocratics, sparta the dominant city state (polis) Classical period (480-323 bc: socrates, plato, aristotle, peloponnesian war (431-404 bc) Lycurgus: spartan kind and law giver, circa 7th century bc. Solon: athenian statesman, circa 630 circa 560 bc. Inherits power after his brother polydectes dies. Lycargus rules as a guardian of a fatherless kind (charilaus) Travels abroad (crete and asia) to avoid suspicion that he intended to harm chariliaus. Sparta had multiple kings, not just one.
