Athens wanted the island of melos to become allies and attached but melos wanted to be independent. Athens says submit or die; they"re stronger and more powerful so if they don"t get what they desire they will destroy: this shows power over morality, we are just playing a role in the drama of power. However, time tells you your circumstance: machiavelli and political realism, you are not told to act and perform based on history; only to acknowledge and use it as a guide.
