Antigone is a rebuttal to the philosophy of the sophists. *( sophists: they reason with clever but false arguments ) Antigone is a warning against those who forget traditional morality . (does being just" tie into traditional morality?) Greek tragedy: performance, athenian tragedy- the oldest form of tragedy, began as a form of cultural entertainment for people of athens in the 6th century. It was written during the peak of tragic performances in athens. It is grouped with oedipus rex and oedipus colonus. Antigone: antigone + politics, many say that it is not an explicitly political tragedy, sophocles was not really involved in politics so it does not really reflect what was going on in athens at the time. It is a more character-driven play, where we think about their ethical struggles.
