Brazil used to have an indigenous population in the millions and when the portuguese arrived, they were only a population of 1 million. There were no stone structures, and no cities at the time they arrived. Additionally, these semi- nomadic groups in brazil was very egalitarian and not hierarchical. There is uncontacted tribes that still exist today within brazil and there is protections to ensure they"re still not in contact. Because they"ve never been in contact with diseases and these would wipe them out. The west was spain"s land and the east was. Portuguese land; portugal got the weaker end of the deal because there was less land. In 1500, portugal was preoccupied with the asian colonies because they had many spices deemed useful. In 1530, it was ordered that french settlers dispelled from brazil. The leader divided the land into 15 capitanias (districts) that he granted to wealthy portuguese individuals.
