In this era, cardenas"s successors chip away at his reforms bit by bit. There was a lot of push for growth and industrialization and clientelism. Clientelism: leader of the party/president offers resources in return for votes from lower status clients. For example, they can offer jobs to key people that can mobilize people of their own. During this era, the opposition is kept in check by coopting dissidence. You can either exclude them or you can selectively try to co-opt them, keeping the opposition movement from growing larger. This era had what was considered a state capitalism approach. They engaged in isi which was very successful which was considered the strategy the mexican miracle . State-supported businesses had little motivation to innovate because they didn"t have big competitors and they were also being paid by the government. However, oil prices crashed and this led to an economic crisis within mexico and had created a national debt.
