Nuclear non-proliferation treaty (npt) (ruzicka and wheeler) (1) India and pakistan refused to join the treaty, they formed their own treaty. Prevent nuclear arms race in the middle east. Minimize the number of states with nuclear weapons. The more nuclear states in the world, the greater the likelihood of a nuclear war. This will affect the entire world and not just the states who are involve/who own nuclear weapons. India and pakistan in the 1970s (officially tested in 1998) North korea tested in 2006 (only country that ratified the npt) Iran is feared to be secretly developing nuclear weapons. Because of these reasons critics suggests that it"s best to keep the npt more a question of prevention. Rationalist critics say that increasing the number of nuclear states decreases the likelihood of war if states are rational. States will not attack a nuclear power because the costs from retaliation are too high.
