POL369Y5 Lecture 2: Lecture 2
Document Summary
Concern was that people believe anything they"re told (thought they were empty vessels) People are drawn to stuff they agree with. Two kinds of people in the world - interested in politics vs. those who aren"t (majority) People won"t agree with information they don"t side with. If people can relate with some news, or if they like something, they are more likely to pay attention to it. People consciously choose what they pay attention to. Partisans think news is biased/ hostile toward their position/ point of view. Partisans see more negative valence to their point of view (valence can be positive or negative) The messenger can affect the way the message is seen (fox vs. cnn) Shown when people think they themselves aren"t affected by media but everyone else it. People decide to be silent if they think their point of view is unfavourable in a social setting to avoid social sanctions (e. g. embarrassment)
