Uses of social media by politicians and propaganda. The textbook: political communication is a field of study in us, but not in. In the past (prior to social media), campaigns would know through polling that they had very heterogeneous groups of people supporting them. They would have to tailor particular components in their ad campaign to target these different groups. Now, you get the impression that you know them as a person because you are communicating in a way: increased inter activity. Actually interact with campaigns now, in the past you would send a letter but now it allows potential supporters have a better experience. Makes you feel like you are somebody. It builds a relationship based community full of supporters which is a significant change because before there was no capacity to do that: sustained engagement. Obama: he builds consistent interaction between the base of potential supporters and campaign.
