POL369Y5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Hypodermic Needle, Mind Control, Anti-Abortion Movements
Document Summary
How frames in thought can be quite powerful and how they can resist frame in communication if they are strong enough. People"s brains are not just sponges that absorb things, and we tend to have a more active process of thought when we navigate the media. Concern of brainwashing individuals (ex: in europe nazism, communism, etc) and people in north america were concerned about this and why are people being brainwashed like this: hg wells wrote a book about mars attacking earth. One guy (need to find name) did an experiment and put on a news broadcast at random times to make people believe that mars actually were attacking earth. People were actually scared and believe this was happening. This led to the hypodermic needle theory which talks about the media being able to inject information into people: however, in reality, media effects are much more subtle and people are not sponges to their information.
