Document Summary

Logic is the study, and the evaluation of reasoning and argument. Logic focusses on the products of these mental processes. Logic has 3 aims that will constitute the central focus of this course: describing patterns of reasoning, 2. Evaluating good and bad making features of reasoning: sanctioning rules for maximizing reasoning"s good-making features. Argument is series of statements (premises) given in support of another statement, the conclusion. Every statement has a truth value: either true or false. 3 key skills we need to have as logical thinkers: how to recognize arguments, how to identify the logical relation(s) between their parts, how to evaluate arguments. Not every related group of statements is an inference or an argument. To identify whether a given passage is an argument you will want to look for its parts: premise: reason or justification for the conclusion, conclusion: the statement, thesis or opinion being argued for.
