Medieval aristotelians: individual things act for purposes in virtue of god"s design. Descartes: we cannot know god"s purposes, a thing acting for a purpose must know the purpose. Statue of liberty: there is a sculptor, known as an efficient, the model is the final cause, there are stuff that the statue is made from called material.
