According to hume, an action is virtuous only if it is done from a virtuous motive. When evaluating an action we"re interested in the motives. An action is virtuous if it is caused by virtuous motives. An action i vicious if it is caused by vicious motives. Thesis: the motive of duty cannot be the primary motive for any virtuous actions. Argument: the motive of duty: i do it because it is the virtuous action . In order to do something because it is the virtuous action, you need to know what the virtuous action is (which action you should preofrm) But the virtuous action is the one caused by the virtuous motive. By hypothesis, the virtuous motive her is the motive of duty. So you should perfom the action that is caused by the motive of duty. So you should prefrom the action that you do just because it is the virtuous action.
