POL113H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Newspeak
Document Summary
Carr states that unlike the internet that bombards us with different sorts of information, a book on the other hand, forces us to focus because there are no outside forces. The internet creates a distraction because of its multifaceted body. Every tab open (email, youtube) requires us to pay attention but our brains are limited. Although we think that we are multitasking, we are not, in- stead we are rapidly switching our attention from one thing to the next. He explains that multi- tasking makes us lose the ability to distinguish important info from trivia. Today, individuals just want to get as much information as possible by skimming through content rather than reading to understand. The consequence of the internet is that it results in a lack of concentration & an in- ability to engage in deep thought.
