Idea that we have an unconscious mind: psychoanalysis, a lot of emphasis on childhood (shaping your later mental health) Id, ego, and superego (not supported by research today) The psyche: made up of the id, ego, and super-ego. Id: the set if uncoordinated instinctual drive, the drives present at birth. Ego-defence mechanisms: ego does not like to feel anxious, we develop strategies to avoid anxiety, repression (intentional forgetting, push it down into unconsciousness, dreams are caused by pressure build up in unconsciousness. Sigmund freud: dreams caused by repressed unconscious desires, dreams disguise the true meaning (latent content) in a bizarre symbolic message (manifest content, need to decode the symbolism. In the conscious mind, symbols typically have one meaning. In the unconscious world, symbols have multiple meaning all simultaneously: dreams have their own language.
