Sigmund freud: dreams caused by repressed unconscious desires, dreams disguise the true meaning (latent content) in a bizarre symbolic message (manifest content, need to decode the symbolism. In the conscious mind, symbols typically have one meaning. In the unconscious world, symbols have multiple meaning all simultaneously: dreams have their own language.
