Document Summary
Chapter 11: human development across the life span: development is the sequence of age-related changes that occur as a person progresses from conception to death. Prenatal development is divided into three phases: germinal stage (2 weeks, embryonic stage (2 weeks 2 months, fetal stage (2 months birth) Period of greater vulnerability because virtually all of the basic physiological structures are being formed: any interferences can cause devastating effects such as miscarriages and birth defects. Fetal stage is the thirds stage of prenatal development, lasting from two months through birth. Environmental factor and prenatal development: teratogens are any external agents such as drugs or viruses that can harm an embryo or fetus. Smoking appears to increase a mother"s risk for miscarriage, stillbirth, and prematurity and newborn"s risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Maternal illness and exposure to toxins: the fetus is largely defenceless against infections because its immune systems matures relatively late in the prenatal period.
