Document Summary
Sensation: stimulation of sense organs, how ear, eyes, taste, smell, etc. work, interpretation of the stimulus, converting stimulus to neurons firing in head. Perception: selection, organization, and interpretation of sensory input, recognize the stimulus, organizes input and translates it into something meaningful. Psychophysics: how physical stimuli are translated into psychological experience. The concept of the threshold (there is no real absolute threshold so ) -> if you can hear low sounds, hearing is very good = you have a low absolute threshold. Absolute threshold: where the stimulus is detected 50% of the time, needed to be redefined, the intensity that you can hear half the time. Just noticeable difference (jnd): smallest difference detectable: weber"s law. Size of jnd proportional to size of initial stimulus. Fechner"s law = size of perceptual experience is proportional to the number of jnd"s that the stimulus is above the absolute threshold. Sensory processes (sensitivity) + decision processes (bias: hits, misses, false alarms, and correct rejections.
