Notion of critical periods for early experiences critical periods suggest that brain is set to acquire a function during a limited period of time. If missed, may not develop fully or at all, particularly vulnerable at times cross-sectional method: compares groups of different ages at the same time, useful for assessing age differences, not useful for examining age changes (life experiences, other factors) Looking for convergence, different methods showing the same results. Prenatal phases: germinal period (first two weeks after conception, embryonic period (3-8 weeks of gestation, fetal period (9 weeks to birth) Very common for pregnancy to abort itself in first two weeks, often without mother knowing.
