Document Summary

Psychometricians: specialize in measuring psychological characteristics, use patterns of performance on multiple tests as starting point to answer questions, if test scores are correlated, it is argued that they all measure the same underlying psychological attribute. In early 1900s, charles spearman found that performance on mental tests correlated and proposed the existence of general intelligence (g) Hierarchal theories argue that general intelligence influences several specific domains of intelligence, each of which can be measured with specific testing methods. You can place intelligence and components of intelligence into a hierarchal system that will narrow down what (g) is. Gardner argued there are 9 distinct types of intelligence and education should try to foster each. Types are based on developmental differences in emergence (child development), neurological bases (studies of brain damaged persons), and domains in which some people are exceptionally talented people. Robert sternberg argues that successful intelligence involves using one"s abilities skillfully to achieve personal goals.
