Goal of applied research is to solve pracical problems. Goal of basic research is to acquire knowledge for knowledge"s sake. Later became famous for work on dionne quintuplets, exploring interacion of environment and geneics. Quintuplets taken from family, live in quitland unil age of 7. Major tourist atracion during 19030"s and 1940"s. Neglect is a very common type of maltreatment. Research group observed development in romanian orphanages to children who were adopted by briish families. Another study took more direct approach, randomly assigning children to stay in orphanages/be adopted into high quality foster care homes. Most aspects of human development involve some interacion between geneics and environment. Coninuous: each new event builds on earlier experiences, development is smooth and gradual accumulaion of abiliies, quanitaive changes. Disconinuous/ stage-like: abrupt changes in ability, development in series of discrete steps/stages in which behaviour gets reorganized into qualitaive new set of behaviours, qualitaive changes.
