PSY240H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Likert Scale, Strange Behaviour, Psychopathology
Document Summary
Normal means average (most people behave that way) Psychopathology is easy to recognize, but difficult to define. Dsm: system in which experts agree that is what it is recognize it (offers a common language and standard criteria for the classification of mental disorders) Dsm (north american) and icd mostly do not overlap. Medicine = biological tests (blood, tissue) | psychology = less definitive tests. Dsm5 said affect doesn"t have to be over long time, but has to be really intense; treat it sooner than later, do not wait weeks. Abnormal behaviour can include single incidence of strange behaviour (psychopathological) or over long period of time (i. e. ocd) Four categories of criteria to identify abnormal behaviour: statistical criteria (use numbers to quantify behaviour, i. e. Experiencing larger amount of something than other people experience. Might be normal, but over long period of time, not good.
