Document Summary
Authoritarian high expectations, little support: children are either rebellious, dependent of socially incompetent. Permissive low expectations, lots of support: children grow up with little direction, no self-motivation, take no responsibility over life. Authoritative high expectations, lots of support: children are well adjusted, socially competent, high self-esteem, achievement oriented. Rejecting/neglecting low expectation, little support: negative mental representations of their interactions with their parents, parents did not teach them regarding social interactions, cognitively insufficient: they will have low expectations, no motivation. Cog: parents don"t take time out to tell children about world scaffolding teaching them about complex aspects through lowering their level so they can understand. Use observational method, going into home with narrative and observing the parents and how they interact with their children. Issues: parents won"t be acting naturally, the types of parents that will participate are not those whose kids are being raised by child services.
