Document Summary
Question the assumption of universal cognitive tools. Differences may exists in: how frequently people use these tools & their purpose. We interpret sensory information from sensory receptors: therefore we don"t see the world as it is it is interpreted. Non western and non-industrialized cultures say the lines are the same length: correct, susceptible to mueller lyer optical illusion. Westerners/ industrialized cultures say the top line is longer. Image formed on retina is the same size, then we use cues to determine distance. In industrialized/ western culture we are used to a carpentered world: our architecture uses angles and coroner, we make use to these cues to judge distance. Which line is longer the horizontal or vertical. Western/ industrialized cultures = both lines are the same length. Non-western/ not industrialized cultures = the vertical line is: correct longer than horizontal. Cues that they use in everyday environment to determine depth.
