Lecture 2. 1 development of the self: how does the self develop, self agency knowledge that you exist as entity and understanding that you are a causal agent in the world, emergence of self-agency. In the first 3 years of life, the sense of self-agency emerges gradually: ex. Mobile conjugate studies take infant and lay flat, suspend mobile from ceiling and tie ribbon from one end of mobile and to ankle. Jiggle infants food in teaching phase as infant sees mobile turn. Infants as young as 3 months learn to kick own foot to move mobile: by 6 months they remember to kick foot causing mobile to turn. Infant uses trial and error to discover world and see what causes pain vs. pleasure. Interpersonal self awareness of self as function of social interaction with others. Infants use mental symbols to act out: emerges gradually until 3-4 years, early stages children engage in active pretend play pretend to perform action.
